St. Thomas Matric. Hr Sec School, Sathumanagar, Chennai 600 019 is one of the first English medium schools in Tiruvottyur, North Madras. The school was founded by Late Mrs. Ponnamma Mathews B.A.,B.T, a trained graduate teacher from Kerala and a diploma holder in Montessori from London trained under Mr. Mario Montessori, son of Dr. Maria Montessori. She was ably supported by her husband Late Mr. C.M. Mathews, former Controller of Finance, MRF Ltd. The need for quality education prompted them to establish this school in Sathuma Nagar in 1968. When the school was started, no student joined the school for the first six months. Then from two students to the present strength of 1000 was a journey of dedication, determination and devotion. Over years the school has evolved into a self sufficient Higher Secondary School with 50 plus staff members, equipped with Labs, Library, Mini Stadium with Athletic Track and Volley Ball , Throw Ball and Basket Ball courts.  ​ It all started with a deep urge to serve the community, Mrs & Mr Mathews chose North Madras as it was a neglected and backward area with regard to education. They started their first school, Model Matriculation Higher Secondary School, on the verandah of their house in Tondiarpet, in 1965. And in 1968, they founded the second school in Sathumanagar - St. Thomas Matric Hr Sec School.
